Join colorectal surgeons Michael Stamos, MD, FACS, FASCRS, of the University of California Irvine Medical Center, and James W. Fleshman, MD, FACS, FASCRS, of the Washington University School of Medicine, as they highlight the use of Advanced Energy in Colorectal surgery. The advent of NOTES (Natural Orifice Trans En Surgery) and LESS (Laparo Endoscopic Single Site Surgery) has re-invigorated the surgical community to a degree unseen since the introduction of laparoscopic cholecystectomy some two decades ago. While NOTES has great potential, widespread use is probably a decade or more away, barring an as yet unforeseen technologic breakthrough. LESS, on the other hand, holds great promise as a current approach, not just for the future. However, aspects of LESS approaches for colorectal resection are problematic due to the complexity of colorectal procedures. With this in mind, we have approached the operation using a variation of LESS which we have termed “no visible scar colectomy”. This technique and surgical approach will be discussed.
This presentation will include demonstrations of the safe and effective use of EnSeal®; it is not intended to be used as a surgical training guide. Additional training beyond the webcast is needed. Other surgeons may employ different techniques. Individual surgeon preference and experience, as well as patient needs, should always dictate variation in procedure steps. Before using any medical device, including those demonstrated or referenced in this presentation, review all packet inserts, with particular attention to the indications, contraindications, warnings and precautions and steps of use of the device. Before performing any new procedure, including those demonstrated or referenced in this presentation, ensure that adequate training has been obtained.
