Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: the gold standard of weight-loss
Weight-Loss: Shawnee Mission Medical Center will host its fourth live surgical Webcast on February 28 at 6:30 p.m. CST (00:30 UTC), when bariatric surgeon Stan Hoehn, MD, performs a minimally invasive Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure.
Considered the "gold standard" of weight-loss surgery, this procedure is widely viewed as the safest and most effective means of achieving long-term weight loss. During gastric bypass surgery, a portion of the stomach is stapled into a small pouch and approximately 40 inches of the small intestine is "bypassed" so food does not absorb along that portion of the small bowel.
Weight loss surgery is an option for individuals between ages 18 and 65, with some exceptions made for those in good health up to age 68. Generally, candidates are 100 pounds or more above "ideal" weight (according to medical charts) with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35.
