He is Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the JW-Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany. Since September 2007, he has served as  chair of the Department for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the Heart & Vascular Centre in Bad Bevensen in Northern Germany.

Dr. Wimmer-Greinecker was born in 1963 in Linz/Donau, Austria, and studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he graduated in 1987. He took his surgical training at the First Department of Surgery, AKH in Linz, Austria, and spent one year at the Medizinische Hochschule, Hannover. He achieved board certification for surgery in 1994. From 1995 to 2007, he was a staff member at the Department for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

He was board certified for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 1997 and became Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery in 1999 and Professor of Cardiac Surgery in 2006.

His special interests are minimally invasive cardiac surgery (especially robotics), anastomotic devices, pathogenicity of CPB (especially neurologic injury) and alternative valve replacements (with vast experiences in Ross procedures, stentless valves and homografts, and recently the transapical approach for catheter-based valve implantation).

He is member of the Austrian Society for Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery; the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery; the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (ISMICS), where he served three times on the Program Committee; and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), where he serves on the Committee for New Technology. He became a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in 2004.

Dr. Wimmer-Greinecker led the data safety monitoring committee of the FDA TECAB trial, participated as principal investigator in several international multi-center trials, is a member of several scientific advisory boards, and is a reviewer for many scientific journals. He has published more than 140 papers, five book chapters and more than 250 abstracts.
