Director of Endoscopy

Peter D. Stevens, M.D. is Director of Endoscopy at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Columbia Campus. He is Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the College of Physicians of Surgeons and Chief of the Interventional Endoscopy Service in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Stevens received his doctorate in medicine from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1987. He then completed his internship and residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in gastroenterology, all at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. During his third year of fellowship, as the advanced endoscopy fellow, Dr. Stevens focused on developing skills in performing ERCP and EUS and initiating research in this area. He was invited to join the faculty in 1994.

Dr. Stevens is principle investigator for several clinical trials to advance the use of endoscopic approaches to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which currently pose challenges to open surgical procedures. His current research interests include the use of novel endoscopic techniques, including pancreatic tissue sampling by endoscopic ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment pancreatic cancer and natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery approaches (NOTES).

An active member of numerous professional societies, Dr. Stevens is past president of the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Society. His contributions to medical literature include peer-reviewed publications on endoscopic screening, surveillance, and treatment of biliary, esophageal, and colorectal disease.
