Transplant pioneer Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD has recently retired as director emeritus of the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. A recipient of the National Medal of Science, Dr. Starzl performed the world’s first successful liver transplant in 1967 and later helped make Pittsburgh a great transplant center. Author of more than 2,100 journal articles, and now in semi-retirement at age 82, he remains one of the world’s most prolific scientists and one of the most cited researchers in clinical medicine.
