FASCRS; Professor of Surgery

Dr. Michael J. Stamos is Professor of Surgery at University of California Irvine School of Medicine, Clinical Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery. Michael was born in Miami, Florida and received his undergraduate and MD degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his internship and residency at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida and received his fellowship training at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Michael then moved west where he joined the University of California Los Angeles faculty and worked primarily at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California for eleven years. In 2002 he went to UC Irvine Medical Center to establish the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery at that institution, and from 2005 – 2006 he served as Interim Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCI.

Michael and his wife Bridget and his son Ilias live in Rolling Hills Estates in Southern California. Michael enjoys the California climate and geography with an active lifestyle including hiking the local terrain. He is also an avid bicyclist and he spends his available free time catching bugs with his four year old son, a budding entomologist.
