Dr. Ruggiero received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his medical degree from New York University. Both residency and fellowship training occurred at The New York Hospital – Cornell University Medical College. Following his fellowship he was Chief Resident in Medicine from 1983-1984. He then joined the full time academic faculty in the division of Hematology Oncology where he is currently Associate Professor of Clinical medicine.

For the past 8 years he has been actively involved with issues of certification and recertification in both internal medicine and medical oncology. From 1998 to 2005 he was a committee member at the American Board of Internal Medicine authoring the oncology portion of the certifying exam in Internal medicine and for the last two years of that tenure chaired the committee in the transition to a computer administered examination. He chaired the education session at the American Society of Clinical Oncology national meeting in 2006 for recertification in Medical Oncology and will again chair it at ASCO 2007 in Chicago.

He was an Associate Editor for the American College of Physicians for the oncology portion of the PIER project. This is a computer based continuing education tool used by internists. He is currently an Associate editor for ASCO for the upcoming edition of the ASCO-SEP.
