Dr. Joseph T. McGinn, Jr., was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Xavier High School and continued his education at the State University of New York, Health Science Center, at Brooklyn (SUNY). He completed residency training in general surgery at SUNY Downstate, Brooklyn, New York followed by a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Queens, New York.
Dr. McGinn is Triple Board Certified in General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and in Surgical Critical Care and has performed more than 5,000 cardiac surgeries.
Concomitant to Dr. McGinn’s responsibilities as Director of the Heart Institute of Staten Island, he is Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital.
As a prominent pioneer of minimally invasive coronary artery by-pass graft surgery, he continues to earn the respect of his peers in the local and international professional community as he teaches off-pump technique at home and abroad. Dr. McGinn continues to be listed as one of New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors.” He is currently the busiest surgeon in New York State performing over 1,200 cardiac surgeries over the past three years.
His most recent presentations have been made at the 20th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Coronary Association in Tokyo, Japan, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Annual Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the AATS Meeting in San Diego, California and Grand Rounds at The Methodist Hospital – DeBakey Heart Center in Houston, Texas. He is also scheduled to present at the upcoming ISMICS Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts in June 2008.
Dr. McGinn holds faculty appointments as Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at New York Medical College, Valhalla, New York, and as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at SUNY Health Science Center, Brooklyn, New York.
He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians and New York State Medical Association, among others.
