Dr. Koen, a native of Ohio, completed his undergraduate studies at The Ohio State University receiving degrees in chemistry and Spanish. He continued at Ohio State earning his M.D. degree in 1993. He then moved to North Carolina to train in neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Center. In 1999 Dr. Koen joined Neurosurgical Specialists, Inc. in Norfolk, Virginia. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Instructor in Neurosurgery for the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at EVMS. Dr. Koen is certified by The American Board of Neurological Surgery.
Dr. Koen’s professional activities include serving as past Chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He sits on the governing council for the Sentara Neuroscience Program, and is also the neurosurgical liaison to the Stroke Operations Committee. Since 2000 he has served as Medical Director for both the Brain Tumor Support Group and the Trigeminal Neuralgia Support Group of Hampton Roads.
Dr. Koen specializes in brain tumors, including skull base techniques and stereotactic radiosurgery (Cyberknife, X-Knife). He also has a special interest and expertise in cerebrovascular surgery including aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVM’s). His current emphasis is on minimally invasive neurosurgery for both the brain and the spine. Dr. Koen has performed intracranial endoscopy for brain tumors, cysts, and hydrocephalus since 1995. He also has one of the region’s largest experiences in minimally invasive spinal surgery for both simple and complex conditions, including herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease.
