Barry T. Katzen, M.D., is the founder and medical director of Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Through Dr. Katzen's leadership, the Institute was established in 1987 with a multidisciplinary team of physicians from a variety of medical and surgical specialties who joined together to offer a comprehensive approach to cardiovascular care. Many other institutions throughout the United States and Europe have since emulated this model for patient care.

Dr. Katzen received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Miami. He completed his radiology residency at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and a fellowship in cardiovascular radiology at St. Vincent's Hospital Medical Center. He later trained in Europe.

Dr. Katzen is Associate Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Radiology, Society of Interventional Radiology, and Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe.

Dr. Katzen is past president of the Society of Interventional Radiology, Association of Vascular Surgery (formerly the International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery), American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. Currently, he is on the board of trustees of the RSNA Research and Education Foundation. He has also served as chairman of the American Heart Association’s Council of Cardiovascular Radiology and Intervention.

Dr. Katzen was awarded the Society of Interventional Radiology’s Gold Medal for lifetime achievement. He was the first American to receive the annual Gold Medal award from the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe for his distinguished achievements in the field of interventional radiology, both in the United States and worldwide. He also received the prestigious Career Achievement Award of the 2007 Transcatheter Therapeutics Conference in Washington, D.C. He is one of a few non-cardiolgists to receive the award since its inception in 1994. He was honored with the Gold Medal of the Alumni Association of the University of Miami and entered into the Hall of Fame, only the fourth such honoree in the medical school’s history.

Throughout his career, Dr. Katzen has been a leader in the development of interventional radiology. He has contributed extensively to the scientific literature and serves on the editorial boards for numerous journals. Dr. Katzen had an early interest in the use of the Internet for education and physician interaction, and in 1995 founded the Endovascular Forum, one of the first interactive physician websites.

Dr. Katzen helped popularize the use of clot-busting drugs for vascular disease. More recently, he has been on the forefront of developing carotid artery stents and stent-grafts to repair aortic and thoracic aneurysms. In 2005, Dr. Katzen led a team of doctors who used stents to repair leg aneurysms in Vice President Dick Cheney.

He has also co-authored four textbooks in interventional medicine and lectures throughout the world on less invasive treatments for vascular disease. He is a pioneer in using “live case” demonstrations to educate physicians in interventional radiology procedures. Additionally, Dr. Katzen is the founding editor of Techniques in Vascular and Interventional Radiology and is currently one of the chief medical editors of Endovascular Today.
