Dr. Carlton Gartner graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1971. He completed his residency at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and served as Chief Resident at that institution. He joined the faculty and at the time of his departure in 2002 for his current position was Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Vice-Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Director of the Diagnostic Referral Service Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He served as Pediatric Residency Program Director for 12 years and initiated the Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program. He held the McCluskey Chair in Medical Education at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. His professional interests include academic general pediatrics, education, diagnostic problems and medically complex patients. He recently completed a 6 year term as a member of the American Board of Pediatrics Board of Directors. He has served on the ABP Committee on Maintenance of Certification since it's inception in 1987. He has been a member of the project group of R3P — Residency Review and Redesign in Pediatrics -- an effort to review Pediatric residency training for the future. He is currently professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical Colleg and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and pediatrician-in-chief, Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children.
