Dr. Mark Fontana is a bariatric and minimally invasive surgeon with Norfolk Surgical Group and Sentara Medical Group. Born in Richmond, Virginia and raised in Connecticut, Dr. Fontana joined the Navy in 1988 and completed medical school and surgery training while in the Navy. Dr. Fontana was stationed in Guam; Naples, Italy; Pensacola, Florida; Portsmouth, Virginia, as well as in Kuwait and Iraq with the United States Marine Corps during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Fontana received the Bronze Star Medal for his achievements in combat during that campaign.
Dr. Fontana then completed a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Obesity Surgery at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. In 2005, he joined Norfolk Surgical Group as a minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon.
Dr. Fontana has performed more than 500 laparoscopic gastric bypass surgeries and laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgeries. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Fontana is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Dr. Fontana's emphasis is on safe surgery, preoperative
patient education and selection, as well as long term follow up of his patients for optimal success.
