Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Robert Fietsam, board certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery, joined Genesis Cardiac Surgeons in July 2007. Dr. Fietsam performs many types of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries including, but not limited to: coronary artery bypass surgery, primarily off-pump; valve surgery, repair and replace; cancer surgery of the lungs, esophagus, and trachea; aneurysm surgery of the thoracic & abdominal aorta; peripheral vascular surgery, including carotids; dialysis access, and modified maze procedure for treatment of atrial fibrillation.

Dr. Fietsam attended undergraduate school at the University of Michigan and medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. He completed his surgical residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1991, was a Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Associate at Wayne State University from 1991-1992, and completed his Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at the Detroit Medical Center in 1995. From 1996 -1998 he was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Duke University.

Dr. Fietsam, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, also is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, the American Medical Association, the American Medical Athletic Association (AMAA) and the American Heart Association.
