Dr. Paul Curcillo is associate professor and vice chairman of the Department of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. He is also the director of minimally invasive and robotic surgery. 

A leader in the field of laparoscopy, Dr. Curcillo performed the world’s first single port access (SPA™) surgery when he successfully removed a woman’s gallbladder through a single incision in the patient’s belly button.

The procedure is the latest in a string of surgical advancements made by Dr. Curcillo to reduce the number of incisions in laparoscopic surgeries. His techniques have been published in leading scientific journals.

Dr. Curcillo received his undergraduate degree from Temple University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Before coming to Drexel, Dr. Curcillo was assistant professor of surgery at Jefferson Medical College, and director of the hernia center and associate director of the metabolic and nutrition support service at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He also established a breast health practice and continues to specialize in breast surgery and gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Curcillo is the president of the Metropolitan Philadelphia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Philadelphia College of Physicians, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.
