Dr. Burns graduated from University of Missouri – Kansas City and completed General Surgical training at University of Southern California – Los Angeles County Hospitals, Pediatric Surgical training at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and a research fellowship investigating intestinal blood flow at the Johns Hopkins Hospitals. He has held faculty positions at the University of Southern California and the University of Virginia before joining the faculty at University of Pittsburgh. He maintains a clinical focus on the management of children with intestinal failure and a research interest in the developmental mechanisms of intestinal atresia. He serves as the Surgical Director of the Intestinal Care and Rehabilitation service at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
