Professor of Surgery
University of Maryland School of Medicine
Director, Coronary Surgery and Advanced Coronary Interventions

Dr. Bonatti is recognized as one of the world’s most experienced cardiac surgeons in minimally invasive coronary operations using the da Vinci Surgical System. He is one of only a few surgeons world-wide with experience in performing a totally endoscopic, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass (TECAB) operation. Dr. Bonatti has performed more than 300 robotic heart surgeries – most were completely endoscopic. The majority of those surgeries were coronary artery bypass grafting procedures.

He started a program in minimally invasive cardiac surgery at Innsbruck University Hospital in Austria in 2001 and has participated in FDA-sponsored studies of the robotic approach to coronary artery bypass surgery. He has authored numerous publications on robotic surgery. With colleagues from interventional cardiology, Dr. Bonatti is also working on integrated hybrid concepts for the treatment of coronary disease where heart surgeons and cardiologists treat the same patient with both minimally invasive surgery and catheter-based intervention. Applying this concept, he was the first to perform a simultaneous hybrid coronary intervention using totally endoscopic surgery and placement of a coronary stent. He has trained heart surgeons from around the world in the use of the da Vinci robot for heart surgery, and he has introduced TECAB procedures in Austria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Turkey, India, and Australia.

Dr. Bonatti earned his medical degree from Innsbruck University in Austria and completed his residencies in general and cardiac surgery at Kitzbuehel General Hospital in Austria, the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and Innsbruck University. His goal is to make coronary artery bypass grafting more patient-friendly by incorporating innovative and minimally invasive approaches. Dr. Bonatti would like to bring robotic endoscopic coronary artery bypass grafting into the mainstream of cardiovascular medicine and would like to teach students, residents, and fellows a new exciting field in cardiovascular surgery.
