Charles Bertel, MD, has been part of the general surgery department at the Duluth Clinic since 1988. During that time, he has held several leadership positions, including Trauma Director at St. Mary’s Medical Center (1991-1995), Duluth Clinic Board Member (1997-2000), and Chief of Surgery at St. Mary’s (1998-2001).
As part of the Duluth Clinic Weight Management Program, Dr. Bertel’s practice has expanded to include weight loss surgery – gastric bypass procedures and LAP-BAND surgery. He works with a team of physicians and other health care providers to offer individualized treatment plans to help his patients’ weight loss concerns.
Dr. Bertel graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed internship and residency programs in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Since 1989, Dr. Bertel has been a clinical assistant professor at the University of Minnesota-Duluth School of Medicine.
Dr. Bertel has been active with several professional groups, including the Lake Superior Medical Society, where he served as president in 1997. He has also been involved with the Minnesota Medical Society and American Society of Bariatric Surgery.
