Hartford, CT-In a live Internet broadcast on December 7th, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET, A urogynecologist at Hartford Hospital performed a procedure on a woman suffering from urinary incontinence. Dr. Christine LaSala performed the procedure. Dr. Paul Tulikangas moderated the event.
Urinary incontinence plagues women in increasing numbers as they age, afflicting an estimated 17 million Americans. Childbirth and declining estrogen levels play a part. When exercise, life style changes and medications have failed, surgery used to be the best option. Now the condition can be treated with a simple outpatient procedure known as "TVT," or tension-free vaginal tape system. Patients go home the same day and some patients are back at work in a week.
