Critical Steps in Laparoscopic Colectomy

Join colorectal surgeons David Margolin, MD, FACS, FASCRS, from the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, and Clyde Neal Ellis, MD, FACS, FASCRS, from the University of South Alabama School of Medicine, as they highlight the critical steps in laparascopic colectomy during a live webcast on December 2 at 6:30pm CST.  Pre-recorded surgical video will include the demonstration of EnSeal® and Harmonic® technologies.

Despite being described over 15 years ago, the adoption of laparoscopic techniques for colon resection have been far less than it’s utilization in a number of other fields such as bariatrics, hernia, and anti-reflux procedures. One possible explanation for this is the complexity of laparoscopic colectomy. When learning a complex new procedure, it is helpful to break the technique down into its critical steps. This allows each step to be mastered using a number of methods including didactic lectures, simulation and animate models. When each step has been mastered, the learner is ready to undertake the task, confident that they have the skills necessary for successful completion.

For laparoscopic colectomy, the critical steps are identification and division of the vessels (ileocolic, middle colic and the inferior mesenteric artery and vein), mobilization or the flexures (both splenic and hepatic), and identification of the ureter in a left colectomy and the duodenum in a right colectomy. In this event, the critical steps for a laparoscopic colectomy will be described with a video demonstration of the techniques used to accomplish each step.

This presentation will include demonstrations of the safe and effective use of EnSeal®; it is not intended to be used as a surgical training guide. Additional training beyond the webcast is needed. Other surgeons may employ different techniques. Individual surgeon preference and experience, as well as patient needs, should always dictate variation in procedure steps. Before using any medical device, including those demonstrated or referenced in this presentation, review all packet inserts, with particular attention to the indications, contraindications, warnings and precautions and steps of use of the device. Before performing any new procedure, including those demonstrated or referenced in this presentation, ensure that adequate training has been obtained.
