Delta XTEND(TM) Reverse Shoulder System

On April 30, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, surgeons and others are invited to join Carl Basamania, MD, as he performs a shoulder replacement with the Delta Xtend™ Reverse Shoulder System from DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. at North Carolina Specialty Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. DePuy is making the broadcast available for free via www.OR-Live.com.

"DePuy has launched the Delta Xtend to give us a new option for treating patients with end-stage cuff-tear arthropathy," said Dr. Basamania. "The new shoulder implant's design reduces the risk of scapular neck erosion and fosters preservation of healthy bone tissue to aid in rapid recovery, while optimizing shoulder range-of-motion." 1, 2

As with any medical treatment, individual results may vary. Only an orthopaedic surgeon can determine whether an orthopaedic implant is an appropriate course of treatment. There are potential risks, and recovery takes time. The performance of the new joint depends on weight, activity level, age and other factors.

He was formerly the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery Service at Durham Veteran's Affairs Medical Center and Assistant Professor at Duke University Medical Center. About the Delta Xtend™ System
The Delta Xtend™ System is a total, semi-constrained shoulder arthroplasty that reverses the normal relationship between the scapular and humeral components. Moving the scapulo-humeral joint center of rotation medially and inferiorly increases the deltoid lever arm as well as the deltoid tension, allowing the muscles of the deltoid group to compensate for rotator cuff deficiencies.

The Delta Xtend™ humeral stem is designed for cemented fixation. The glenoid component is cementless with four screws for primary fixation and HA coating for secondary fixation. The Delta Xtend™ is not recommended for people who have bone disease, deficiencies in the scapula, or for patients who do not have functioning deltoid muscles.
