OBGYN: Fibroids tend to run in families and studies have shown that compared to the general population, black women are at greater risk. According to Long Island College Hospital's Dr. Comrie, up to 50 percent of black women will have at least one fibroid and 20 to 30 percent of those with fibroids can have severe problems, including irregular and heavy bleeding, anemia and miscarriages. Often the recommended treatment of fibroids is a hysterectomy, or removal of the entire uterus. However, many women diagnosed with this type of tumor are looking for alternatives if they wish to have children or simply do not want to lose their uterus.
