“ More than 1,100 patients have completed AtlantiCare’s online “Community Lecture on Morbid Obesity” since it went live in 2005. Nearly a third of them decided to have bariatric surgery at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Center for Surgical Weight Loss and Wellness.”

Give patients interested in weight-loss surgery a tool to learn about the procedure in an efficient and effective manner that does not require an in-person hospital visit.

Because the long-term success of weight loss surgery relies on a patient’s commitment to following physician guidelines, AltantiCare Regional Medical Center required candidates who expressed interest in the hospital’s surgical bariatric program to attend a live seminar to learn about the surgery.
With no other educational resource available, clinical staff spent four hours every weekend conducting classes to educate patients on their pre- and post-surgical responsibilities, which culminated in a written test. Only after patients passed the exam could they consult a surgeon for a screening.
To supplement the live seminar, the hospital wanted to make the program more accessible by creating an online educational tool that would give patients more flexibility in meeting these requirements.

Create an online portal that allows patients to effectively learn about surgical weight-loss options and tests them on their comprehension of the material.

ORLive created an interactive microsite for AtlantiCare where patients could learn about the surgery and their responsibilities. The custom microsite was bilingual and incorporated a surgical overview, interviews with physicians, patient success stories, and an online test. The site was seamlessly integrated into the
hospital’s existing platforms and directed those who passed the test to a patient portal where they could schedule a consultation at the hospital.

The resulting microsite helps garner more interest in the procedure at AtlantiCare by effectively expanding the hospital’s geographic reach and giving those who can’t make in-person hospital visits another opportunity for passing the required tests.

Because the prequalification process no longer requires attending a live seminar, more patients have taken the necessary first steps to undergo the procedure. As a result of the microsite’s launch, capacity at AtlantiCare has been increased to meet the additional demand. Almost three hundred procedures have been done using the new screening portal, resulting in $8MM in bariatric services. More than 120 additional patients have begun pre-op screening or scheduled consultations through the site.

“ Patients have commented that they appreciated the flexibility and privacy the online lecture provided as they took their first step toward a healthier life.”
